Industry Codes

What is it?

Industry codes are a numeric code that classify or identify a company according to the primary business it's engaged in for the collection, analysis, and publishing of statistical data related to the U.S. business economy. Until the NAFTA treaty was signed, the standard code was the SIC (Standard Industrial Classification). This was replaced with a 6-digit system in 1997 known as the NAICS code (North American Industrial Classification System) which includes Canada and Mexico. A Standard International Trade Classification also exists. These codes are often used in searching business databases like Mergent.

Where Can I find an industry code?
