Research Questions Chapter 1-6

Chapters 1-6

1.  After reading today’s section of Left to Tell, do a little Internet research on the reasons behind the Hutu/Tutsi conflict (be sure to choose reliable sources).  Write a paragraph or two about what you have learned.

2.  In addition, find some research to clarify/supplement Immaculee’s impressions as she lives through this experience.  How does aggression escalate into genocide?  What seems to be the “last straw” that leads to an all-out massacre of Tutsis in Rwanda?

Research Questions Chapter 13-18

Chapters 13-18

1.  What is your understanding of the word “holocaust” (part of the subtitle of the book)?  What holocausts are you aware of in world history?  What brought them about?  What were the broad consequences of them?  How does this word apply to the three month violence in Rwanda?

2.  This book is neither political nor accusatory, but again and again, we hear that there is no help forthcoming from the rest of the world.  Think about this and supplement your thoughts with a little outside research.  Why did the outside world provide so little, so late?

Chapters 19 - Epilogue

Chapters  19  -  Epilogue

Using Internet research or other current sources, describe conditions in Rwanda today.  Be sure to include effects of the genocide which are persisting in this country.
