The Brother Edmond Drouin Library employs over a dozen student workers as Library Assistants who help us extend the reach of our services. These students play an important role in the Library and we’d like for you to get to know them. Please welcome our next spotlighted student joins us this year as a transfer student from Notre Dame College.

Where are you from?

London, UK

What are you studying?

Business Management

What activities are you involved in?

Here at Walsh, I play Rugby. My position is called Hooker. The reason behind that is because it’s one of the specific skills to my position. You ‘Hook’ the ball in the scrums.

How has your transition been to Walsh from NDC?

I would say my transition has been very smooth to Walsh from NDC. Like many of my fellow ex NDC students, we have all enjoyed the massive upgrade of campus here at Walsh. Now that I have adjusted to new surroundings and routines of Walsh, I’m having a great time, attempting to meet new people and be as involved in campus life as possible.

What is your favorite thing about Walsh?

My favourite thing about Walsh is all the campus activities. Everyday there is something new to try or be involved in, which I find amazing and it makes for a really enjoyable student-campus experience.

Why do you like working in the library?

The main reason why I enjoy working at the library is because of the fellow workers. They have made it very welcoming and an easy transition. They make it enjoyable to come to and work at the library.

Hamish’s Guide to Rugby Terms

  • Knock on - When a player loses (drops) the ball forward.
  • Scrum - A way to restart the game after a knock on. Eight players from each team push for the ball.
  • Lineout - The way to restart the game when a player runs out of bounds.
  • Try - Equivalent of a Touchdown (Worth 5 points in rugby).
  • Conversion - Worth 2 points. It’s the kick after a Try.
  • Penalty - When a team infringes on the rules. The other team is given the ball.
  • Ruck - After a player is tackled, a player from each team competing for the ball creates a ruck.
  • Maul - A maul is like a ruck, but players are standing up. Has to be at least two players from each team involved to make a maul.
  • Penalty Kick - Like a Field Goal, it’s worth 3 points.
