Foundations of Information Literacy

Framing the conversation of information literacy for students & researchers

What are we working toward?

SLO #1: Walsh community members can determine the nature and extent of their information need, and have knowledge to seek out a librarian who can assist them in their scholarly endeavor.

            Supports Campus wide Learning Outcomes like:

           “Gaining a basic understanding of the subject” in our case—library and information literacy

and  “Learning how to find, evaluate, and use resources to explore a topic in depth”

SLO #2: Access, gather and utilize a variety of information resources; including physical and digital materials; and use the information gathered effectively & efficiently to accomplish a specific purpose.

            Supports Campus Wide LOs like: “developing specific skills, competencies, and points of view needed by                            professionals in the field most closely related to this course.” and

            Supports LO “Learning to apply knowledge and skills to benefit others or serve the public good.”

SLO #3: Walsh community members are critical thinkers in evaluating information resources. They can determine Currency, Relevance, Authority, Accuracy, and Purpose of a resource and report their resources in an ethical and legal manner.

Supports LO “Developing ethical reasoning and/or ethical decision making”

Supports LO “Learning to analyze and critically evaluate ideas, arguments, and points of view.”

SLO #4:  Integrate retrieved information into new knowledge and purpose (as exhibited in a research paper, report, experiment or other artifact) for effective communication, spiritual growth, and/or personal, professional or cultural development.

            Supports LO “Learning to apply knowledge and skills to benefit others or serve the public good.”

            Supports LO “Learning how to find, evaluate, and use resources to explore a topic in depth.”
