How to Read Photography/Art

What’s in a picture?

Ask yourself the standard four "W" questions when viewing an image: who, what, where, and when?

  • Who or what do you see in the image?
  • When was this photograph taken/art created?
  • What is happening in the photograph/art?
  • Where was this photograph taken/art created?

Critical thinking and visual thinking involve a fifth "W" — why. Ask:

  • Why did the photographer/artist select these particular elements to include in their work? What don’t you see?
  • Why did the photographer/artist emphasize certain elements and not others? What’s in focus? Is only one person or element in focus, or are many elements in focus?
  • Why did the photographer/artist take the picture at this moment? What happened before or after this picture was taken/created?
  • Why did the photographer/artist take/create the picture from this angle? What might the scene have looked like from another vantage point — from left, right, behind, above, or below?
