In a nutshell, pasting a link instead of including a downloaded PDF is less risky in terms of possible infringement because the link will only work if your site has access to the book.
Can I use a photo that I find in a database or eBook?
No. Those images belong to the publisher of the materials. You should not use these images beyond the recommended Fair Use timelines.
