Company Profiles and how to do a Peer Group Analysis

Company Profiles and Histories

There are many different places to find information on a company, including a history/timeline of the company. Here are some suggestion of where to look:

  • Company's website
    • Most company websites include an "About Us" section. These sections sometimes include a self-reported history of the company.
  • Annual report
    • Public companies are required to file an annual report (10-K) with the U.S. government. These reports typically include a section on the company's history.
  • Search for articles
    • When searching for articles on a specific company, there may be articles that include historical information on the company. This applies to newspaper, trade/magazine, and scholarly articles.

This library database consists of company profiles. For each company included in the library's subscription of Mergent Online, there is a profile, a history, and more in-depth company details.

  • In the Company Search box, type the company name or ticker symbol.

  • Find the company history under the Company Details tab.

By searching for a specific company, you may be able to find articles that refer directly to your company. The library's main business database is Business Source Complete. Along with this database, Google Scholar is another resource to try.

  1. In the first search box, type the name of the company.
  2. Use the drop-down menu to the right of the box to select the CO Company Entity field.

Articles on a Company

Finding scholarly articles on a specific company can be done using the following search strategies.

  • Combine search terms with the company name.
  • Use the Select a Field dropdown menu to have the database search for articles that have the company name or ticker symbol.

Case Studies

A case study can be a detailed account of a company, industry, person, or project, and may include information about company objectives, strategies, challenges, results, recommendations, and more.
