Consumer research is the process of gathering information about current and potential customers as well as information on what motivates them to purchase or use products and services. 

There are two types of consumer research data, primary research data and secondary research data.

  • Primary research data is information obtained first hand from consumers usually through surveys and focus groups. Primary research data can be very targeted but is labor intensive and usually costly. 
  • Secondary research data is information gathered through market reports and statistics. Secondary data is collected by others so may not include the wanted data.
