Kathleen “Kate” Rubbins reached astronaut status in the 2009 NASA class. Her claim to fame was recently, 2016, when she became the first person ever to sequence DNA in space. She used the MinION in order to fully sequence DNA to be able to determine potential life-threatening issues to astronauts in space. Along with this amazing accomplishment, she has also conducted two spacewalks while having spent 115 days in space. Since receiving her Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from Stanfod University Medical School Biochemistry Department and Microbiology and Immunology Department, she has been able to use her knowledge to better molecular knowledge in space.
